Some anniversaries deserve more than dinner out. They deserve a river view at sunset, a bluff-top trail with nobody else on it, and a suite where you have nowhere to be until morning. If you’ve been searching for romantic getaways in Wisconsin, I want to point you toward my favorite corner of the state: the St. Croix Valley and the Great River Road, where two rivers meet and small river towns line the water all the way south.
This is the guide I’d hand a friend. Where to go, what to do together, where to eat, and where to stay, all of it close enough to the Twin Cities that the getaway starts the minute you leave the driveway.
Prescott sits right where the St. Croix River meets the Mississippi, under an hour from both Minneapolis and St. Paul. That short drive is the secret. You can leave after work, check in before dark, and still have the whole evening ahead of you. No flights, no long haul, just a quick hop across the river into a slower pace.
From Prescott, the Great River Road (Highway 35) runs north toward the St. Croix and south along the Mississippi bluffs, which makes it an easy home base for a couple’s road trip. If you only have one night, stay close. If you have two or three, take the drive. For a full itinerary, see our 48 hours in Prescott guide.
Here’s the route I’d take you on, north to south. Pick two or three stops, or make a day of all of them.
Start at Interstate State Park, where the Potholes Trail is short but rewards you with dramatic views over the St. Croix Dalles, the rocky gorge the river cuts through. Pack a coffee, take your time on the overlooks, and let the morning set the pace. More in our St. Croix Falls guide.
Cascade Falls is tucked into the heart of downtown Osceola. Take the stairs down to the falls, then follow the wooded path toward the St. Croix. It’s the kind of quiet little detour you’ll still be talking about on the drive home. See our Osceola guide for where to stop next.
Prescott is the heart of this trip. Walk up to Freedom Park, home to the Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center, and look out over the spot where the St. Croix flows into the mighty Mississippi. In the evening, grab a seat at the bar at Muddy Waters, order the smoked salmon and chat with the locals, or settle into the multi-level patio at Two Rivers Lodge. Our local’s guide to Prescott and romantic restaurants list have more ideas.
Head south on Highway 35 to Maiden Rock Bluff State Natural Area. The trail leads to the top of the bluff, high above the Mississippi, with a view up and down the river valley. It’s one of the most beautiful places in Western Wisconsin to stand side by side and say nothing at all. Our scenic drives & views guide maps out more stops along the way.
Stockholm is tiny, charming and worth the stop for the Stockholm Pie & General Store alone. Split a slice (or don’t), wander the little shops, and keep driving south along the river.
Villa Bellezza Winery in Pepin feels like a little Italian village, built around a piazza with a fountain. Do a tasting, then stay for brick-oven pizza at Il Forno. In cooler months, the heated porticos keep the patio cozy. More pours along the river in our wineries & wine tastings guide.
End the drive at the Nelson Cheese Factory. Pick up a cheeseboard, find a spot in the Fireplace Wine Room, and take home something for later. See our Nelson one-day itinerary to round out the trip.
After a day on the river road, Prescott is the place to land. These are the suites couples ask for again and again.
