Every small town has one place where you can walk in at 7 a.m. on a Saturday and see the whole community in one room. In Prescott, it’s The Kitchen Table.
The first time I brought friends from the Cities, I didn’t tell them anything about it. We walked in out of the cold, the door swung shut behind us, and the place was already buzzing: a table of bikers in leather jackets by the window, a young family wrestling a toddler into a high chair, two older guys at the bar arguing happily about the Packers. Our server sat us, poured coffee before we asked and said, “You’ve gotta try the Benny. Trust me.” She was right, and my friends still bring it up every time they visit.
So if you’re staying with us in Prescott, here’s everything I’d tell you about The Kitchen Table over the phone before your trip.
The Kitchen Table sits on Broad Street in the heart of downtown, a short walk from the river. Inside, it’s all warm wood, with a vintage wood-top bar running along one side and tables packed close enough that you’ll end up chatting with your neighbors. The idea, they’ll tell you, is that it should feel like your own kitchen table at home.
Then there are the signs. A few hundred of them cover the walls, cheeky, punny and occasionally a little sassy, and you will catch yourself reading them instead of the menu. Kids make a game of finding the giant pen. The tagline on the menu says it’s “boater, biker, and every other ‘er’ friendly,” and that’s exactly the crowd you’ll find. Everybody’s welcome, and the staff will give you a hard time right back if you give them one.
Your server will seat you and take your order at the table, so grab a seat, settle in and don’t rush.
Executive Chef Aaron Wolf runs the kitchen, and his menu is Midwestern comfort food with a sense of humor. Look for the “Wolfie Approved” favorites. Here’s how I’d order for the table.
This is the dish that got The Kitchen Table featured on America’s Best Restaurants. It’s an English muffin piled with real lobster and tender asparagus, two poached eggs and a blanket of hollandaise. It sounds fancy for a small-town breakfast spot, and that’s exactly why it’s so good. If it’s your first visit, start here.
This is the one the locals order, and it’s built like it was designed by someone who had a very long night. A heap of hash browns comes loaded with corned beef, pepper jack, onions, jalapeños and tomatoes, topped with your eggs however you like them and a pour of hollandaise, with toast on the side. It’s spicy, salty, cheesy and enormous. Plan on sharing, or plan on skipping lunch.
Not a corned beef person? The Loaded Hash has the same base, with cheddar instead of pepper jack, and you can add whatever meat you like.
My friend who claims she “doesn’t do spicy” ordered this once and hasn’t ordered anything else since. A split buttermilk biscuit gets a crispy chicken patty in Nashville hot sauce, two poached eggs and habanero hollandaise. Order a side of sausage gravy for dipping. You’ll thank me.
For the pork lovers: house-made bacon jam, extra-thick-cut bacon, poached eggs and hollandaise on an English muffin, finished with (you guessed it) more bacon.
Two pancakes stuffed with house-made sausage and pepper jack. Add sausage gravy on top and, as the menu puts it, they become “Man Cakes.” Sweet, salty, a little spicy and impossible to finish.
Whatever you order, get a slice of the Apple French Toast on the side. It’s thick-cut cinnamon swirl bread with a cornflake crust, topped with warm apple chutney. Or do what the regulars do and swap your toast for a slice of French toast for about a dollar more.
Breakfast and lunch are served all day, and lunch is where the kitchen really gets creative. The burgers are a third of a pound and come with house chips.
The soups are homemade and rotate, so ask your server what’s on. If you can’t decide, order the soup flight and try a few.
Half the fun of The Kitchen Table happens at the bar. Order the Bloody flight for the table and pass the glasses around, or go for a coffee flight if it’s early. The Brunch Creamsicle and Strawberry Lemonade Mimosa are great on a sunny morning, and the French Toast Cocktail tastes exactly like it sounds.
Then there’s the Breakfast Shot. If you’ve never had one, ask your server. It comes with a little tradition, and it’s a lot of fun.
In winter, the drink menu warms up with a North Pole Mocha, Hot Buttered Brandy, a Cinnamon Roll Cocoa and a White Christmas Mimosa.
